The Ultimate Gift

As Christmas fast approaches, many are looking forward to unwrapping lots and lots of gifts and some are already depressed because they don’t have much hope for any gifts
at all. But lost in the commercialization of this most sacred of holy days, far too many will be oblivious to or knowingly choose to reject the most glorious gift of all – the birth of the Messiah and Savior of the world, Jesus.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whosoever will believe will not
perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus is the ultimate gift. Unwrap him and you unwrap everything you could ever hope for, dream or imagine. For just a moment, indulge me in this exercise. Think about everything you desire this season, everything that will make your life perfect. Is it the gift itself or is it the emotions they will elicit in you that make the difference?
You want the diamond bracelet because it is proof you are loved and you have no financial
worries. In other words, you really desire love, security and significance. How about that IPad2? Yes, it will enable you work more effectively, but again what are you trying to achieve by producing more? You want the love and respect of your family and the world. You want more money to have and do more things. I could go on. The fact is that everything we are pursuing is designed to bring us love, security, a sense of being alive, peace, joy and. Everything we are striving and seeking for is found in one gift – the gift of Jesus Christ.
As the Prince of Peace, he is the ultimate harbinger of peace; as the son of God (who
is himself love), he alone can fill all the cracks and crevices of our broken souls; as the Messiah, he alone can give us real security and save us from a certain torment for eternity; as the Bread of Life, he is the only one capable of satisfying our hunger; as the Bright
Morning Star, he alone can put a song in your heart; as the Advocate, only he can successfully intercede on your behalf; as the Living Water, nothing but him can quench our thirst; as the King of Kings, he has total dominion over everything; as the Way, the Truth and the Life, only in him can we move, live, and have our being.
However, your Christmas celebration goes, whatever traditions you celebrate, in the
midst of the merriment, the food, the movies, basketball and football games, don’t
neglect the most precious of all your gifts and underestimate its value just because it is free.
With all the gifts you will give and hopefully receive this season and throughout the year, I pray that we all make some time to give, meditate on and receive the ultimate gift – Jesus Christ himself.
