The Importance of Preparation
As human beings we have an innate desire for significance. We want to be recognized. We want to be affirmed and celebrated. Even the person who considers themselves shy and introverted still lights up when given a compliment. We all crave to be successful, however we may define success.
Many of us have dreams of living in the lap of luxury. We want to be the best and the
brightest in what we do. We want to own our own businesses, drive the best
cars, live in the biggest homes, enjoy the best vacations, sport the latest
clothes and trends, and have the best options. But how many of us are willing
to put in the effort, sweat and tears that is required behind the scenes before
we can get the glory we crave?
As a Life Coach and a Motivational Speaker (see https://www.ayaeneli.com/), I am often asked to share my secret to success. My interpretation of this question is that usually the inquirer wants to know if there is a short-cut, a sure-fire and fool proof path I discovered to success. Can they just click their heels three times and attain all their heart
Dear friend, there are no shortcuts to success. Even if you stumble upon “success”, you will still have to do the necessary work to maintain it. Those who supposedly attain
success overnight inwardly acknowledge that they have no self-confidence and
they live in constant fear of being exposed for the frauds they perceive
themselves to be and dread being stripped of the so-called success.
Collin Powell says, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” Joe Poyer concurs by stating, “Thorough preparation makes its own luck.” Robert H. Schuler reminds us, “Spectacular achievement is always preceded by spectacular preparation.” The life of Jesus certainly bears this out. He prepared for thirty years to serve for three years. And what a spectacular three years they were that have changed the history of the world forever and impacted billions!
On a more human scale, when asked about how she can sing live and at the same time dance as vigorously as she does, Beyonce revealed that she sings and practices her dance routines in heels for 8 hours a day. Wow! How great could you be if you were that dedicated to your craft?
Several centuries ago, a Japanese emperor commissioned an artist to paint a bird. A number of months passed, then several years, and still no painting was brought to the palace. Finally the emperor became so exasperated that he went to the artist’s home to demand an explanation. Instead of making excuses, the artist placed a blank canvas on the
easel. In less than an hour, he completed a painting that was to become a
brilliant masterpiece. When the emperor asked the reason for the delay, the
artist showed him armloads of drawings of feathers, wings, heads, and feet.
Then he explained that all of this research and study had been necessary before
he could complete the painting. (Our Daily Bread)
So, what preparations are you making for your success? Are you advancing your education with a clear plan for applying that knowledge to create your dreams? Are you exercising your body and eating the right foods for its optimal performance. Are you staying
away from dream killers and those who would attempt to keep you down in the
same pit of non-achievement in which they dwell? Are you ready to wake up
early, stay up late, and turn down social events just to focus on the
preparation required for the success you envision for yourself? Are you ready
to go the distance, however long it may take?
What does it mean to prepare for success? What is preparation? Preparation is the action or process of making something ready for use or service. In other words, if you want success, you must be willing to render a use or service that appeals to others. The greater the appeal, the greater your success.
How does that fit into your definition of success? Are you just hoping to strike it rich? Or do you see yourself providing a service or meeting a need in the world? However you define success, whatever your dreams and aspirations, however intense your desire for significance and recognition, you must first commit to and actively prepare. Then and only then, can you guarantee your results.
Start preparing today. Your big opportunity may be right around the corner, and it will go to the one who is prepared.
